According to The Daily Echo, Southampton are open to offers for Jannik Vestergaard this month.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Denmark international has lost his place in the side following the 2-1 defeat to Everton at the beginning of November, as Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens have developed an excellent partnership which has seen the Saints rise up to 12th in the Premier League table on 25 points – they had just eight to their name after that 9-0 loss to Leicester, and the defender hasn’t made a Premier League appearance since that game against the Toffees.
Vestergaard – who cost the south coast side £18m when they signed him from Borussia Monchengladbach – recently made a rare start in the 2-0 win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup third round.
Following that victory, the 27-year-old revealed that he’d prefer to stay and fight for his place at St Mary’s, although The Daily Echo’s report suggests that Southampton aren’t prepared to give him that opportunity if a suitable offer arrives at their door.
Another huge waste of money
The fact that Southampton are prepared to let such an expensive asset walk out the door just 18 months after signing him really does say a lot about their transfer strategy of late.
Incidentally, the Saints have also allowed other pricey purchases such as Mario Lemina, Wesley Hoedt – who these Southampton fans on Twitter were not impressed with after he took aim at Hasenhuttl – Guido Carrillo and Mohamed Elyounoussi, who cost £18.1m, £15m, £19m and £16m respectively.
All four of them have been allowed to leave the club on loan, and The Daily Echo’s report that Vestergaard could well follow the quartet in heading out the St Mary’s exit door after being deemed surplus to requirements just goes to prove that the Dane has been another monumental waste of money from those higher up at Southampton.

It is also telling how little the Saints rate Vestergaard, as his exit would leave Hasenhuttl with only Maya Yoshida to provide cover for Stephens and Bednarek.
